A conversation with the doctor

Meeting Dr. Budaev, psychotherapist

A conversation about a path through medicine: from pediatric neurology and acupuncture — to understanding who is really doing the healing.

— Hello, Roman Vasilyevich!

— Hello.

— I know that you are a rather well-known doctor in the field of acupuncture, and that patients reach out to you every day, writing to your email and to Telegram. Tell me, are you practicing acupuncture at the moment?

— To answer that question, we need to start at the very beginning, to rewind the tape of my life a little. In this case, in the field of medicine. More precisely, in the field of the kind of medicine that is unusual to grasp.

It is normally called non-conventional medicine, or alternative medicine. I would like to tell you a little about myself in the context of that field.

Chapter 1Pediatric neurologist, physician, surgeon, gastroenterologist, massage therapist

Actually, my popularity came to me at a time when I was not yet acquainted with acupuncture and was not working in the field of non-conventional medicine at all. For a very long time I worked in official medicine, and I started out as a pediatric neurologist.

I graduated from medical school as a pediatrician, then took a specialization in pediatric neurology and worked in that field. After that I worked as a general practitioner. So, since we have dug into this subject, let me tell you the whole story, so that you understand who I am as a Doctor, in the broad sense of the word.

I worked as a general practitioner and, at the same time, as a surgeon.

There was a short period in my life when I took part as a surgeon and a trauma doctor in certain sporting events, and those events could be small-scale or large.

How I provided help: you sit there at the competition, and if there is an injury, you grab your case and run off to give emergency care. I had that kind of experience too.

Then I worked as a gastroenterologist.

I remembered something else — I worked as a massage therapist while I was studying at the institute; back then I completed massage courses with a fairly well-known specialist in the field and practiced massage, and I practiced both adult and pediatric massage.

I did massage professionally while working as a pediatric neurologist at the time. Of course, the answer is coming out a bit chaotic right now, because I am recalling in real time everything I have done in my life.

Chapter 2Urology

Then I began taking an interest in urology, completed courses in urology and started helping men in that area. I taught men the right attitude toward the prostate gland, helped them in that field. Then I wanted to become a urologist. I completed an elective course in urology, and in order to receive the full qualification of a urologist I had to take a specialization in the subject.

I went to my head physician and said that I wanted to become a urologist.

The words that changed everything

But the head physician said to me: “Roman Vasilyevich, urology is not what you need. You must become a psychotherapist“…

Chapter 3An unexpected turn. Psychotherapy

Here we are already touching on questions of destiny.

You know how it is: you plan something, you think about it, you are sure this is what you need — and then you are told something like that… That you must become a psychotherapist… For me it was completely unexpected, I could not even picture myself doing it.

I had heard, of course, that there are psychotherapists who hold sessions, but to me it seemed like something unknown, I was actually skeptical about it. It took me a certain amount of time to think it all over, to accept it and to believe that this was what I needed.

And, as it turned out, it was a fateful decision. In fact, that decision is where my path in the field of unusual medicine began. How, through the word, by wielding the word, you can change people’s destinies.

“How, through the word, by wielding the word, you can change people’s destinies”

Chapter 4Non-conventional medicine

After that, within one year of practice, I was met by — let’s put it this way — fame and popularity. Coming back to the question of acupuncture: the results of my work as a psychotherapist were unusual in terms of how people understood them; even then, interesting and unusual moments of healing were taking place.

And my ability to influence people without applying any methods of official medicine came to light, and so, little by little, people learned about me and about my gift.

Later on, in the course of my work, some of the people I came into contact with would tell me, would suggest to me: “Roman Vasilyevich, it would be a good idea for you to practice acupuncture alongside psychotherapy.”

Chapter 5Popularity

So that you get the overall picture and the scale of my popularity back when I was a psychotherapist: people came to me from all over Kharkiv. Doctors themselves sent me children, parents, adults, recommended me. And I did not even know those doctors personally, we had never met.

People arrive, and at that moment I am running a session. They wait outside the office, I come out of the session, there are people sitting there, I do not know them, and they say:

— Roman Vasilyevich, is that you?

I say: — Yes.

— We were sent here so that you would help us.

— Where are you from?

— From Kharkiv.

— Who sent you?

— Doctor so-and-so.

I do not know that doctor. But there were quite a lot of cases like that, and later, over time, people started coming from various cities of Ukraine, from countries near and far: Germany, America, the Arab Emirates. There were many people from Russia.

This is what comes to mind right now, on the surface, without digging deep.

Chapter 6My abilities — accepting and realizing them

By then my abilities, my talents in the field of unusual healing, had already manifested. I did not quite understand — or rather, did not quite realize — how I was managing it, what was happening. I thought that the method I was using, psychotherapy, was what affected the person, while I stayed somewhere in the background.

By the way, right now I am touching on an important question about who I am, how I help people and what kind of effect I have on them.

An important thought

So it was as a psychotherapist that my gift for influencing a person’s destiny — and not only their health — began to show itself.

After all, most often people came to me about their health. That is, it was the reason to come to me. But once we got into close work on a person’s health, most people’s destinies changed. Not only did their health improve and their illness go away, but their destiny as a whole changed.

That is, if a person had a problem in their personal relationships — it got resolved. If there was a problem in their relationship with their parents — the same; with their children — the same. If the problem was about career growth, if for example a person wanted to change jobs and move up — that happened too. People’s financial situations improved. They could be working an ordinary job, and then bang, they went into business.

01

Personal relationships — got resolved

02

Relationships with parents and children — the same

03

Career growth — it happened

04

Financial matters — they improved

So it was all interconnected. That is something I only started to analyze later. People would come to me and tell me things, and I did not understand that all of it was tied to my influence. Not only to health.

Chapter 7Acupuncture

Well, and then, once it had been suggested to me that acupuncture could also be practiced as a discipline accompanying psychotherapy, I obtained a license to practice acupuncture, completed the courses and became an acupuncturist — although I had started using needles earlier than that, before the official certification.

I began taking an interest, studying the discipline on my own, and started practicing on my patients. And then, once I received the official document, that is when I began practicing acupuncture officially.

Well, what can I tell you… To say that the treatment changed qualitatively, that my effect on people changed… That did not happen.

Back then I did not understand it either, I thought that the needles were what healed, that psychotherapy healed. And then I simply started… You know, a certain understanding came… Something happened inside me…

You know, classically, acupuncture is done at 10 points, so you insert 10 needles, observing all the laws, the Yin and Yang rule — there are nuances there, how it is all done, Day and Night… Everything has to be too correct, too clever, I would say, observing all the flows, the meridians, how to balance it all properly, how to direct it…

All of that has to be studied, has to be known…

Chapter 8My experiments and their results

And then an understanding came… How should I put it… I got lazy about inserting 10 needles. And I remembered that in the courses we had been taught that one point is enough, plus two or three additional ones, for the effect to take place.

I started inserting 1—3 needles, simply because I was too lazy to insert 10—12. Let me paint the picture for you, so you see what the reason was.

Say you have 10 people lying down at a session. Another 5 are sitting. You see how much time each person takes. You cannot just jab. It has to be done carefully, gently, knowing the particular angle of the needle, the particular force. That comes with experience. Just imagine how much time can go into a single person.

And a doctor’s time is limited; by regulation you are allotted a small little time limit for each procedure, and you have to fit into it. Anyone who works in official medicine knows what I mean. Fitting into the limit is hard.

I tried running an experiment, doing 3 needles. The result was one and the same. Of course, I could not see and analyze the result right away — it took time.

“Then I moved on to a single needle. Thinking about where to place it, for which illness, which main point to choose. Still matching all the rules, so that it would be balanced. I look — and the result is one and the same”

And I thought: “Let me try jabbing wherever.” That is, at any point at all, regardless of the illness. Just wherever I felt like at that moment. Well, I think you can guess what happened. The result was one and the same.

Here I am, sharing my story with my viewers, listeners, subscribers, sharing how it all went for me. And in doing so I am answering your first question: “Are you practicing acupuncture now?”

So we are getting close to that answer. Because if I had answered it in isolation, it would be hard to make sense of the answer without knowing my story.

Chapter 9 · It is not about the methods

And then, you know, little by little this understanding started coming to me — that it is by no means about the methods I was practicing.

At a certain moment the puzzle came together in my head regarding all those situations, events, my patients, their lives and their health. Cases started coming back to me, cases where people got better simply in my presence. And when children were brought in — a child is small, it is hard to insert a needle into them. It can be done with some children, the brave ones, but for the most part children are afraid of those procedures. And here is how I got around it: a mother would come with her child, they would sit down and simply be present at the session. My appointments are going on, and I could seat the mother with her child, and they simply sat there in my presence.

When you are working at such a fast pace, with so many people — you do not pay attention to facts like that. Back then the rhythm of life was very hard, I slept a few hours a day, plus the night shifts on top of it; I will tell you honestly, it was a nightmare. For many years of my life I did not belong to myself.

Now all of it is starting to come back to me after the fact. Many people came to me later, after some time, to thank me. Or other people would come, acquaintances of the patients I had worked with. And I could ask how they were doing.

And often I heard that a great deal had changed for those people. It is very important to follow the lives of the people who came to you. And I somehow did all of it intuitively, it was interesting to me — how a person lives after my help, whether I helped them.

I gathered all of this, and at some point, hop, it came together into a puzzle. And I understood that if, in the course of acupuncture, I had started sticking needles in willy-nilly, pardon the expression, and the result was one and the same, then how could I fail to notice that over time. And I was keeping observations over a long period.

First I placed the needles in the classical manner, then I modernized that classic into my own approach. Then I reduced the number of needles, then I placed them in a single point, and then I placed them wherever I felt like.

Chapter 10A healing influence

You see what I am trying to say… In conversation with a person, I could transform their consciousness. Smokers, for instance, miners. Some of them have 20 years or more of working in the mines. And on top of that they smoke 2 packs a day.

They come to you, they ask for help. And the effect of the mine on their lungs was very active all that time. Under such an impact the vessels become glassy, because the coal dust embeds itself into the tissue of the airways, and people suffer serious damage. And on top of that they smoke. And a person like that understands that he needs to get rid of it, but he finds it hard to do.

One conversation

So, one conversation of mine with a person was enough for the transformation to take place, and he would stop smoking. I did not insert needles back then, I simply talked calmly with the person for a while.

When people were simply in my presence — the very same healing effect took place.

Chapter 11Who does the healing?

Do the methods heal —
or the one standing behind them?

I began to understand, I asked myself the question: “So it turns out that if you set aside all those methods, all that knowledge — who does the healing then? Do the methods heal, or do I, the one standing behind those methods?”

I am in the shadow, as it were, and I am not visible. People come for a psychotherapist, for an acupuncturist, but not for the person. Even the query they type online is acupuncture. So a person believes in the method and comes to you.

Some do not believe, they are skeptical, but they come as well. And still, even the skeptics, once they came to me for treatment, experienced one and the same result — they got well.

I began to understand that it is about me, about my abilities, my talents. About what has been given to me from above by the Creator — the ability to influence a person if he is next to me. I do not even have to say anything. I can simply sit there; that is the kind of energy that is embedded in me.

Over time I began to understand all of this. And now I have answered your question: “Are you practicing acupuncture?” Out of that question and out of this conversation of mine a new question arises — and why would I practice any method at all.

“And why would I practice any method at all”

Chapter 12A story

I also remembered an interesting situation. I did not remember it just now — I remembered it back then, when everything was beginning to come together in my head.

When I was practicing psychotherapy, a lot of people came to my sessions. The room was enormous, there were armchairs for people, but there were not enough seats for everyone, extra chairs were always being brought in.

I even remember one case when, right before a session, the head of the psychotherapy department runs into my office and says:

— Calm your patients down.

I say: — What is going on?

I step out of the office, walk over to where our sessions were held, and I see some kind of scuffle there. And the department head calls after me:

— There is a fight going on there, go and calm them down.

I get there — and indeed, a fight. As it turned out, people had started the fight in order to get into my session, to take a seat. Because it even got to the point where people stood through my sessions. They sat in the armchairs, they sat on the chairs, and some even stood. And some I had lie down on the floor.

So sometimes I did not even have room to walk between the rows. That was the scale of it.

Chapter 13Healing at a distance

And it was then — and at that time I was doing psychotherapy — that a woman came up to me; it was quite a long time ago, right now it is 2019, and this was in 2009. So she came up after a session and says: “Roman Vasilyevich, do you not practice healing at a distance?”

You know, moments like that stay with you, they catch on to you. And you do not forget them. They run right through you, as it were. At the time you pay them no attention, and then, over time, they start coming back. And you begin to understand.

She did not mean what is now called healing at a distance, in the sense of Skype, the way it is practiced now. She meant healing at a distance by means of my influence.

She says: “I have a person, she is bedridden and cannot come to you.”

This is 2008—2009, the internet was not developed.

She says: “Can you affect a person at a distance?”

Her acquaintance had bad legs — I still remember it, the woman could not walk. As a rule, that is already a severe degree of venous dilation or of atherosclerotic changes as a consequence of diabetes, or of age, or of some other illness.

“And she cannot walk. Could you not work on her at a distance?”

And I remember it as though it were now: I had a skeptical smile on my face, I looked at the woman as at someone a little strange. I thought skeptically, how can anyone believe in this. In a thing like that.

I said: “No, I do not do this and I will not be able to help. That person must come to me in person, have a conversation. Then I will decide how to treat her.”

Years later

So many years have passed, and now all of it has come back to me. It turns out that destiny was hinting to me even back then — you can do this too, go on, this is your calling. And I paid no attention to it at the time. And now I remember…
